WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

Robots are already for some years a normal appearance in industrial environments, performing repetitive, high-precision and sometimes dangerous operations on factory floors. In recent years the robots are more and more used for other tasks like warehouse pick up and logistics.

All these robots are especially programmed for a certain task using programming languages proprietary to the robot manufacturing companies. When different robots are used in the same environment, or when the same robots need to be programmed for different environments the software effort is considerable.

The challenge for today is to envisage a high level scheduling / programming environment that can be used to program robots in an easy to use and intuitive manner. Use this environment to program multiple robots  to perform for example warehouse distribution tasks or production tasks including normal operation but also extraordinary situations (congestions, recovery and retries, etc.).

To make the challenge more specific, consider a robot scheduling mechanism with multiple robots, having different characteristics.

  • Consider how to devise an optimal schedule (in time, cost, energy, etc.)
  • Consider¬†resilience (what happens in case of failure, congestion)
  • Consider extendibility (what happens when a robot is added)
  • Consider local versus central intelligence.

HOW CAN YOU WIN THIS TRACK?

Show that the envisaged environment can easily deal with different environments and tasks. Show in an example application that it can deal with both normal and extraordinary situations.

  • Flexibility.
